History of the breed
The Scottish Terrier is considered one of the oldest hunting breeds in Scotland. The nationality of Scotch tapes is reflected even in their name: “Scottish Terrier”. The mountainous climate requires maximum adaptability and undemandingness. Hence the small size and thick coat.
Foxes and badgers were the objects of hunting of Scotch Terriers. And those specimens who were lucky enough to find shelter in the castles of the aristocracy rid the premises of rats.
For a long time, the owners willingly crossed short-legged Scottish and long-haired English terriers. But in the middle of the 19th century, the Scotch Terriers became an independent breed. True, uniform standards were not developed, therefore, until the end of the century, Scotch Terriers were called any dogs of a suitable species, engaged in catching rats and hunting in holes. Other terrier species and the West Highlands also had this specialization.
Spontaneous breeding seriously hindered the emergence of uniform standards. Every locality in Scotland had its own type of terrier, which breeders considered ideal for the task. Terriers, this unimaginable mixture of genes of different pores could only be called terriers for hunting.
A fundamental factor in the formation of the Scottish Terrier breed was the decision of the English Kennel Club to divide the Scottish Terrier into different classes – depending on color.
Much credit for the selection of the Scottish Terrier into an independent breed belongs to Captain McKee. This officer has spent a lot of time and money traveling throughout Scotland, buying up black and wheat-colored Terriers. As a result, in 1883, the Scotch Terriers became the owners of the breed standard, finally separating from the West Highlands and Skye Terriers.
The appearance of the dog, as close as possible to the modern one, was brought out by the breeders of the city of Aberdeen, the breed was originally called “Aberdeen Terrier”. The first Scottish Terrier club was founded in 1892.
Brave hunters were brought to the New World at the end of the 19th century, but were not appreciated – the Americans did not understand why these dogs were needed. Franklin Roosevelt became the trendsetter for scotch tape. The Scottish Terrier named Fala, presented to the president for Christmas, has become his constant companion and an integral part of his image. The breed immediately received the popular love of the inhabitants of the United States. After his death, Fala was buried next to the owner.
Breeding of the breed in Russia seems to have been opposed by fate itself. At the beginning of the 20th century, members of the royal family became the first owners of Scotch Terriers in Russia. But, during the 1917 revolution, small shaggy dogs ceased to exist along with the aristocracy. In the 1930s, breeders again became interested in the Scottish breed, but the Great Patriotic War, which began in 1941, again put an end to the breeding of a new breed for the USSR.
It was only in the 1970s that it was possible to fully breed Scotch Terriers in the USSR. The Krasnaya Zvezda kennel bought pedigree dogs abroad, and they became the founders of the breed in Russia.
Marketers also did not fail to take advantage of the memorable appearance – images of Scotch Terriers are often used to create the image of products. The most famous example – whiskey “Black and White”, on the label of which depicts the Scottish Terrier and West Highland.
A long and difficult selection did not damage the natural qualities of the Scotch Terriers: they are strong, brave, cunning, aggressive dogs. But as hunters shaggy kids are rarely used now. But they are known as one of the best breeds that can become companions..
You need to accustom a puppy to a leash from three months, otherwise you will have to chase after him – hunting instincts cannot be canceled. [/сolor-box]
Puppies can spoil a lot of things, it’s impossible to fight it. The only way out is to hide away anything that is a pity, and to schedule repairs after buying the dog. If the destruction goes beyond all boundaries, you can slightly spank the bully, but at the same time be sure to explain why. Otherwise, instead of realizing the wrongdoing, the puppy will be offended.
Young “Scots” love to use their teeth. Such attempts should be terminated immediately. But you should not abuse shouts and prohibitions – what is an incentive for other dogs, for an Scotch Terrier is a reason to be offended.
There is no need to expect a quick result from training – dogs of this breed must first assess the need and attractiveness of teams.
In general – a healthy breed, the basis of a good condition is diet and vitamins. But there is a disposition of representatives of the breed to oncological diseases of the blood and stomach. Most often the disease affects old bitches.
- Skin diseases.
- Heavy labor.
Depending on the region, breed purity, age and characteristics, the cost of a puppy will be from 15,000 to 25,000 rubles.
