Affenpinscher is a German breed. The name “affenpinscher” translates as “monkey pinscher”. The dog’s muzzle really resembles a monkey, which, combined with a shaggy body, huge self-love and a quarrelsome character, makes the Affenpinscher a very specific pet.

History of the breed
Affenpinschers were bred in the south of Germany with one and only purpose: to destroy the rats terrorizing grain barns. The most popular miniature rat-catchers were among the merchants of Lubeck.
The first representatives of the breed were larger than modern individuals, and the merchants did not have any questions about the colors of the dogs. Unexpectedly for breeders by the 19th century, Affenpinschers themselves had become an expensive commodity: the aristocratic families of continental Europe bought small rodent hunters and kept them as lap dogs. Merchants exported a huge number of “decorative breed” animals outside Germany.
Shaggy kids are anxious about “their” territory, so loud barking will warn about the approach of guests, without delving into the details: whether they are invited or not.
Shaggy pets were depicted on canvases by Albrecht Durer and other medieval masters. Descriptions appeared in the 17th century. But German pragmatists did not keep herd books, so it is impossible to understand which dogs became the ancestors of the Affenpinschers. It is assumed that pinschers and pug-like Asian breeds stood at the source, but, most likely, these species did not manage.
1913 – it was then that the Affenpinschers received official recognition from German dog handlers. The breed was registered in the New World and Britain in 1936.
The Second World War significantly affected the number of shaggy pets. After its completion, there were almost no Affenpinschers left in Germany.
Affenpinschers are still considered a rare breed in their homeland. The number of purebred puppies is no more than 30 per year. There are very few of them in Russia. If you want to buy a unique pet for home keeping, “monkeys” – what you need.
The appearance of the first Affenpinscher in Russia is associated with the arrival of the future Empress Catherine II in the country. The little squabbler traveled with the royal convoy to protect the magnificent dresses from mice. For a long time nothing was heard about the representatives of this breed. Only at the end of the 20th century were the first tribal Affenpinschers brought in, but still “monkeys” are considered exotic.
A small, black, shaggy lump with beady eyes and a beard, takes himself very seriously, holds himself proudly, realizing his own magnificence, which makes Affenpinscher a very comic character.

Affenpinschers are kind to their own person. There should be no other pets in the house – the “monkey” will be able to ruin the life of those who are larger, and radically resolve the issue with those who are smaller.
According to Affenpinscher, there can be only one pet: him.
Many representatives of the breed see competitors in children as well: “monkeys” no doubt declare war on a child, do dirty tricks, spoil things, bite. To show affection to a child in the presence of a shaggy dog is a direct path to instant enmity.
Any movement within a few meters outside the front door is accompanied by a panicky bark, meaning a simple demand: “Get everyone out.”
Affenpinschers feel great even in the smallest apartment … if the owner is nearby.
The talent for organizing swara is also manifested on walks: this little creature is able to provoke even the most phlegmatic dog into a fight, and then hide behind the owner. The breeders strongly recommend a leash for an affenpeater: not to keep the pet from attacking, but for the maximum speed of flight from the place of the next disgrace.
But with a beloved and only deity – the owner – the Affenpinscher is transformed. Becomes cultured, affectionate, understanding, supportive, ready for any action. The sensitivity shown by the squabbler is simply amazing: he does not require anything, with a lack of time he will modestly sit down and wait for the moment when he will be paid attention.
Affenpinscher activity is always welcome. In the company of the owner, the dog is ready for any journey – in the back seat of a car, on the trunk of a bicycle. In this case, the vehicle immediately goes into the category “mine”, a security zone is assigned within a radius of a couple of meters, and the car alarm can be omitted – a shaggy misunderstanding perfectly replaces it.
Representatives of the breed are active and nimble, but, with enough time for a walk, they are happy to while away the time, lying on the couch next to the owner. The Affenpinscher will not be able to relax around the clock himself and will not allow such a luxury to the owner – by barking, jumping and small dirty tricks, the pet will force to take up the leash and go out into the street.
This breed cannot stand loneliness. When the Supreme Being leaves, life loses its meaning, so the dog allows himself to chew on slippers, rip the upholstery of the sofa, mess in the middle of the room, scatter clothes and things. Returning from work, you may decide that there were robbers in the apartment. No, it was a bored little, unhappy dog.
Breeders recommend leaving your pet in a mini-aviary when leaving home, where its destructive activities will be limited. In general, if the work schedule does not involve a lot of free time, you should not start an Affenpinscher – such a schedule will make the dog unhappy, and the owner will have to do cleaning, washing and repairing after work.
Taking into account the inexhaustible energy of the baby, toys are indispensable: they will help the puppy develop, and the adult dog – to have fun when the owner is not around.
Charm and sweet appearance are compensated by disorder and stubbornness. All a doggie needs is affection, attention, games, activity and goodies. With this approach, a shaggy baby is able to deliver many unpleasant minutes to the owner. From an early age, the puppy will have to explain the rules of behavior and set prohibitions.
Energy and hot temperament provoke the puppy to acrobatic stunts and throws at the legs. It is worth weaning your pet from such a habit right away: it will not be able to carry it down – there will not be enough weight, but tripping over the baby is also not much fun, especially if you have a bowl of food in your hands.
Cynologists advise not to treat this breed as cute babies – cunning cosmatics immediately use any weakness and emotions. The training process should consist of short cycles, interrupted by long pauses: “monkeys” are instantly carried away by the new, but no less quickly and lose interest. All classes must be in a game format.
The first workouts are best done indoors, without the presence of other people. It is impossible for puppies not to be distracted by movement, noise, smells. Attempts to train in the fresh air will inevitably fail. Positive stimulation is necessary when learning: caress or favorite food.
The owner’s reaction to wrong actions acts as a counterbalance. Displeasure is expressed by intonation or silence. The relationship with the owner means a lot to the pet, therefore, seeing discontent, he will refrain from wrong actions in the future.
The prohibition includes damage to things, bites of family members and guests, impatient tearing of toys or food from the hands.
Small dogs have a hard time learning the difference between living quarters and an emergency space. It is not an easy task to accustom Affenpinscher to the litter box. For this, a mini-aviary is used, where the baby goes for half an hour, after which he refers to the tray. The fenced-off space is perceived as a place to rest and sleep – the puppy will not be dirty there. Actions will have to be repeated several times a day..
An ornamental breed requires a lot of attention. Caring for cosmatics requires serious.
According to the standard, “the coat does not need trimming.” In practice, plucking is indispensable: perfectly flat coat is a rarity for the breed. Once every few months, you will have to carry out this procedure – by hand or with a stripping knife. The main thing is not to get carried away: the “highlight” of the breed is precisely in its shaginess.
The muzzle is trimmed with scissors so that the shape of the head resembles a ball. It is also necessary to trim the beard, otherwise food leftovers will find a permanent refuge there while eating. Owners of dogs participating in shows will have to keep the original length – marks are seriously reduced for traces of trimming or scissors.
It is necessary to cut the hair in the ears and under the tail if there is no desire to constantly wash the animal. If the coat interferes with the pet’s ability to look, you will have to work with scissors near the eyes.
Combing is done at least three times a week with a medium-toothed brush, and then with a massage brush.
Frequent water treatments will damage the coat. Once every few months is sufficient for coarse-coated dogs.
Trim nails – once a month.
Brushing your teeth – once a week – dental problems are not uncommon for this breed.
Daily eye exams are a must. Every seven days, you will have to wipe them with a soft cloth with tea infusion – to avoid inflammation.
The ears should also be checked regularly. Excessive wax deposits should be removed with a soft cloth dampened with lotion.
Free walking is undesirable: even in a fenced area, a compact pet will find a gap and will not slow down to slip outside. Considering Affenpinscher’s quarrelsome nature and frivolous size, such a walk could end badly.
Representatives of this breed are fed with dry or wet super-premium food. Natural products are not prohibited either. The diet does not differ from the food of other purebred dogs. Lean meat, sea fish, dairy products, cereals, vegetables, fruits. Such a menu will have to be supplemented with products containing substances necessary for health.
Affenpinschers are strictly prohibited from eating “human” food from the common table: allergic reactions and stomach problems are possible. As an incentive treat, you can use cheese, any dried fruits, except candied fruits, crackers.
The main problems affenpinschers bring themselves: numerous dislocations and fractures – a consequence of excess energy in this breed. There are few genetic diseases to which the representatives of the breed are prone:
- heart diseases;
- problems of the genitourinary system;
- eye diseases;
- problem teeth.
Affenpinschers live 12 to 14 years with proper care.
Choosing a puppy
There are not many puppies in one litter – no more than four, therefore, when choosing, it is worth looking at all the babies. A good indicator will be the same size and weight of all puppies. One weak is the norm.
- The puppy’s coat should not have bald patches and bald patches, an unpleasant odor.
- Pay attention to bite and complete set of teeth.
- Curiosity, sniffing, and attempting to defend territory with loud barks are natural behavior for puppies. If the kids are lethargic and inactive, something is wrong..
- Look at the parents: many indicators of the exterior and character are inherited, to one degree or another.
- A professional breeder will answer affirmatively to the request to “track” the puppy in the first year – this indicates that the person is not indifferent to his business, excluding the option with commercial breeding “anyhow”.
Affenpinscher Price (Puppy Price)
A rare breed even in its homeland, it is still exotic in Russia. There are few specialized kennels, but the quality of the puppies is “jumping”. The price depends on the titles of the parents, the severity and purity of the characteristics of the breed, the exhibition perspective.
- Pet-class kids, with deviations from the standard, without the right to mate, will cost from 25 to 30 thousand rubles.
- Puppies of international champions, with the prospect of taking prizes, are estimated in the range from 90 to 120 thousand rubles.
