History of the Great Dane breed
This breed owes much to Germany, first of all – its name. However, no matter how hard the Germans try to find its roots in their native land, they are much deeper, namely, in real antiquity.
The first dog-like dogs appeared in Tibet. They were excellent warriors, whose spirit conquered everyone who came into contact with them directly. Therefore, later the dog gets to Babylon and Ancient Egypt, where he was given its due. The Persians used dog-like dogs in battle, clothed in iron shells that allowed them to smash cavalry regiments. Later, Alexander the Great made the breed “titled”, announcing it to the world. In the Middle Ages, the Celtic mastiff appears, of course, with its own characteristics. Crossbreeding at that time took place in a natural way, but later became purposeful, which led to the emergence of an extraordinary dog.
There are several versions of the origin of the breed. According to one of them, the Great Dane was fostered by crossing guard dogs of large sizes and a greyhound, according to another version – by crossing a boar dog and a bulldog.
- The image of a dog-like dog was met by archaeologists excavating in Ancient Egypt.
- He is also the main character of the miniature by the French artist Robinet Tesara, created in the 16th century..
In Germany, where breed standards were first registered and approved at the end of the 19th century, its purity is being monitored as vigilantly as possible, which leads to the incredible popularity of the Great Dane in the 20th century. The Germans have studied the breed thoroughly.
The very concept of “Great Dane” suggests that it is a very large animal. Due to their size (they are recognized as the largest in the world), mastiffs pretended primarily to the role of a guard dog, due to their stateliness – to the role of a noble companion.
In the 20s of the last century, when Count Karl Brazovall took up the issue closely, the first wave of popularity took place. The Second World War interrupted this process, but interest arose again in 1958, when Count Wiederd de Sankler became interested in the giant.
Previously, depending on where this animal lived, it was given a local name:
Now only one name has been approved – “German”, recognized throughout the world.
Why was it withdrawn?
The first representatives of the breed were intended mostly for hunting. Their power and intelligence made it possible to control the dog in a given direction. Later, special attention was paid to the most striking qualities – intelligence and complaisance, which made it possible to use him as a sled dog. Good protective qualities are noted.
Characteristics and description of the Great Dane
Thanks to its noble posture, the dog is recognized by Apollo of the canine world. His appearance will not mislead anyone. If you meet a representative of this breed on the street, you will not be able to confuse him with someone.
Every detail of the figure is beautifully outlined, starting with the head: an elongated skull with a rectangular muzzle; powerful, pronounced jaws with an overhanging upper lip; very intelligent and expressive eyes; a nose with a black lobe; ears can be erect, cropped, or drooping; neck – long and muscular; chest – deep, well-defined, well developed; belly – straight, tucked up; limbs – straight, muscular; paws with soft pads; tail – long, drooping, tapering to the very tip.
The figure is lean, slender. The overall impression is integrity, strength, harmony. The figure of a mastiff can be conventionally placed in a square, that is, the length of the body does not exceed the height. Males are slightly taller and heavier.
Since bitches are slightly smaller than males, their average weight is 45 – 59 kg, while males weigh 54 – 90 kg.
Sex determines the growth of different representatives of the breed:
- females – from 71 to 81 cm;
- cables – from 76 to 86 cm;
Its average life expectancy is 8-10 years, which is typical for representatives of large breeds..
Great Dane character
This amazing animal is harmonious in everything. His aristocratic appearance is not at all deceiving, such is his character. This is an incredibly kind, peace-loving dog, often brooding, slow, but at the same time mischievous and cheerful. Its size can confuse a stranger, which will not be superfluous in certain circumstances. Yes, he can protect, and this is justified. Such a dog will never offend its own people, unless by accident, hitting it with its powerful tail. How will he behave with strangers? The answer is simple: the way the owner will behave with them. That is, he is peaceful with friends and wary of enemies.
Another feature: patient, loyal, courageous, self-confident, cheerful and sociable, he does not like loneliness.
Two unique features:
- has a good memory;
Most popular colors
The Great Dane is characterized by a shiny, smooth coat and dense skin with bright pigments. By color, the breed is conventionally divided into three groups: fawn, marble and blue.
It is usually a uniform pale to deep gold color. A black mask is preferred by standards. Additional spots in this color are discouraged, although possible.
This group includes two colors – marble and brindle. Tiger in all respects corresponds to fawn (shades and spots), but the presence of even black stripes in the direction of the edges is mandatory.
The marbled color is characterized by a general white background, on which torn black spots are unevenly located. The general background in this case may be gray, but this color is less preferable.
There are also two options here: directly blue and black..
If we talk about black, then it is necessary to note its depth and saturation. In the black color, the presence of white spots in a different combination is allowed – swept away, spots, etc. For a blue color, a steel tint is characteristic, white spots are also allowed, only fawn and black shades on the coat are rejected.
Care and maintenance of the Great Dane in the apartment
The character of the dog is not the only criterion when choosing, especially when it comes to a large animal. Great Dane requires careful grooming, despite its “shorthair”:
- nutrition is an important point;
- grooming and standard hygiene;
- education, training and maintenance in the apartment;
The Great Dane is omnivorous, but this very moment is considered the most vulnerable in this breed. Healthy puppy nutrition is the basis for the further successful (or dysfunctional) development of the dog. A balanced menu at an early age must be strictly observed, otherwise there will be serious violations in the development of the skeleton and the activity of vital organs (liver, gastrointestinal tract, etc.).
Grooming and standard hygiene
Even short coats are prone to shedding. Yes, the Great Dane sheds. And this happens throughout the year. That is why combing is a must and is recommended every week. It is also necessary to regularly monitor the cleanliness of the eyes (every day) and ears (every other day), which will prevent possible inflammation. Claws should be trimmed every ten days. It is recommended to wash the dog every week, for this procedure it is important to choose a high-quality detergent.
Education, training and maintenance
If you start education at an early age, then problems will not arise in the future. The emphasis is on training for the first two years, after which the character of the dog is fully formed. Difficulties in training, as a rule, do not arise, since the Great Dane is an intelligent, docile dog, who in everything tries to please his master. Particular attention is paid to the long walks that he needs.
The puppy is very playful and mobile. However, this is also typical of an adult dog. Another quality is excessive curiosity. This step can be a hassle as your friend will try to explore all the nooks and crannies. Conclusion: equip the apartment in such a way that the pet does not spoil what is important to you.
Great Danes love their home, moreover, they completely consider it theirs. They also, like you, prefer to sleep on a bed, not on the floor, and relax in a chair. One gets the feeling that this animal was created specifically for the apartment, not for the enclosure. Take into account his wishes, adjust to them, then the difficulties will “go away” by themselves.
Zeus is the largest representative of the breed
In 2013, one of the representatives of this breed was included in the Guinness Book of Records. The name of this dog is Zeus. This is no longer just a giant, but a real giant, whose height at the withers was 111.8 cm. He lived in Michigan. In 2013, he was 5 years old, his weight at that time was more than 70 kg. To keep fit, the dog ate a 14 kg bag of food every day! When the giant rose on its hind legs, that is, it stretched out to its full height, its body length was 2.2 meters. It is not difficult to find photographs where Zeus is captured with his owners, the sight is amazing. The shepherd dog living with them could easily pass under this amazing beast. Zeus’ character was the most “dogovian”, that is, it was an excellent, companionable dog. He lived a little, only 6 years, in 2014 Zeus passed away.
Estimated price of a Great Dane puppy
The cost of a puppy from professional breeders varies from 40 to 60 thousand rubles. If you buy a dog without documents, the price will be much lower – from 12 to 16 thousand. But here everyone makes their own choice.
