Once in the Ukrainian steppes and in the south of Russia one could find a curious animal of large size, abundantly covered with wool. We are talking about herding dogs who helped the shepherds to graze the cattle. Perhaps in the old days they had a name, but over time it has been lost. When the famous zoologist Friedrich Falz-Fein became interested in the breed, he decided to close this gap..
The content of the article:
YURO is a selection breed obtained by crossing different individuals: Molossians, Greyhounds and Crimean Shepherds. The basis of the crossing was the busty dogs with hard hair brought from Spain, which accompanied the flocks of sheep imported into Russia. It is their features that are most pronounced in YURO. What was the crossing for? The Spanish Shepherd Dog lacked power, and there were many wolves in the Tauride province, where the sheep were sent. There is disagreement as to when this happened:
- during the reign of Catherine II;
- under Paul 1;
- or the “Spaniards” were brought into the province by Duke Friedrich Falz-Fein himself;
The shepherd’s dog was not only a shepherd’s skills, he was an excellent guard. Later, history invaded his fate: after two world wars, the safety of the breed was threatened. However, they managed to save it.
For the first time YURO was described in 1893 by the dog handler Sabaneev. At the same time, the status and name of the South Russian Shepherd Dog (unofficial names: Tavricheskaya Shepherd Dog, Yuzhak) were fixed for her. The standards were adopted in 1931, and in 1996 YURO was registered with the ICF.
South Russian Shepherd breed description
JURO is a large and strong animal, whose weight often exceeds 35 kg. The height at the withers can reach 65 cm. But this applies to males, bitches are slightly lower – 62 cm at the withers. Thick long coat gives the South Russian Shepherd Dog a great resemblance to the Hungarian Commander or the English Bobtail. Hair length sometimes reaches 30 cm, and the undercoat is much thicker than in other dogs. Today, an exceptionally light color of various shades is found. But even 100 years ago, there were black and red individuals among them.
Standards approved in 1996:
- height at the withers – 62 – 65 cm;
- the body is strong, lean;
- the chest is wide and somewhat flattened;
- the loin is round, wide;
- back straight;
- The head is slightly elongated, the forehead is not very wide;
- ears – small, drooping;
- dark eyes are set horizontally;
- the nose is straight and large;
- white teeth closely spaced;
- scissor bite (violation of this paragraph leads to disqualification);
- limbs are strong, muscular;
- free movement;
- long tail;
Is it easy to confuse it with an English Bobtail or Hungarian Komondor? Only an amateur will confuse, since YURO has specific features.

How to choose a South Russian Shepherd puppy
The purity of the breed is very important. Its importance increases significantly when it comes to a serious dog. This is exactly what YURO belongs to. If marriage concerns only external criteria – this is not so bad, the genetics of the dog’s character is much more important. Therefore, you should buy such a puppy in a good kennel or from serious breeders who monitor the purity of the breed.
It is better to get acquainted with the baby when he turns 3 months old. During this period, dignity and vices are already clearly manifested. They choose a baby according to four criteria at once:
- follow his behavior: active, fearless, independent, curious;
- checking the documents for the puppy;
- scrupulously study the pedigree;
- conduct an external examination, which makes it possible to judge the health of the baby: clean eyes, shiny thick hair, paws should be without signs of seals;
How much does YURO cost
The approximate price for puppies in Russia is 25 thousand rubles. But in different regions it may differ. A significant factor is the dog’s pedigree.
